One big difference between the 1st and 2nd CD has to do with orchestration. When we were developing the material for the first album Sonya was living in New York, and we were performing on a regular basis. Our group consisted of violin, spinet, and harmonium/hammer dulcimer, and all the songs were originally realized by that ensemble. Later when it came to recording, other instruments were added, but it was all around that foundation. After the 1st CD, Sonya moved to Austin, Texas, and we pretty much stopped performing. So when I got an idea for a song, I was no longer (necessarily) thinking in terms of the original ensemble. These are the musicians who mostly made Trainfare Home sound the way it does. |
